Societal norms and expectations have changed significantly in recent years, and these shifts have had an effect on divorce rates. While it used to be considered a no-no to live together and/or have children without getting married first, these things are now common in our society. There is less pressure on couples to get married, so many wait longer before tying the knot, if they get married at all. It used to be a common belief that having children together prior to marriage was a relationship death sentence, however, study findings recently published show that unwed couples who have children are no more likely to divorce than couples who marry prior to having children.

The survey was done by the National Survey of Family Growth, which operates under the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The researchers looked at two sets of data, from two different time periods. The first time period examined couples who had kids between 1985 and 1995, and the second period was couples who had kids between 1997 and 2010. The women surveyed answered questions about their relationship and families. In the earlier time period, there was a 60% increased risk of divorce in couples who had children first, then wed. But in the later time period, the number of couples who had children prior to getting marred had doubled, yet there was no higher risk of divorce for these couples versus couples who married first and then had children. The one group with the highest rate of separation were couples who had children but never married.
